In the past, a simple crime such as robbery affected few people at a time. Now, in our digitally connected world, a robbery can affect tens of millions of people at the same time. Examples of this are often seen in our daily news:
“Target: Hack May Have Hit 40 Million Accounts” – CNET News 12/19/2013
“Neiman Marcus: 1.1 Million Credit Cards Exposed in Three-Month Hack” – Wired 01/24/2014
“Six More U.S. Retailers Hit By Target-like Hacks” – Computerworld 01/17/2014
Three headlines in two months indicate the severity and the frequency of these kinds of attacks.
According to KrebsOnSecurity, the security breach at Target was likely due to malware that gained access to Target’s POS network. The access to the network was possibly through a vendor hit with a phishing email that installed malware on the vendor’s network. Later, this vendor accessed Target’s supplier portal. Although Target is required to keep its network security in compliance with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards and typical industry practice would isolate the POS network, the breach still occurred.
Despite every effort to protect ourselves from physical crime, there is still a need for police forensics investigation. In the same way, despite every effort to protect ourselves from cybercrime, there is still a need for network forensics. Every network needs it, but it is not provided through local government - it is the responsibility of the network owner to have the means in place which will collect the evidence needed for analysis in case of a network breach.
